  Chronicle of the Institute:

 May 22, 1972: Foundation Stone of Manipur Medical College was laid.
   
 August 17, 1972: Formal Inauguration Ceremony of the College was held.
   
 Sept. 14, 1972:

Regional Medical College established as a joint venture of the North Eastern States supported by the Govt. of Manipur.

   
 Sept. 26, 1972: College formally inaugurated by Hon’ble Chief Minister Md. Alimuddin.
   
 Dec.1973-June     1974:

First batch of students lose 6 months due to postponement of first professional MBBS Examination owing to non-recognition.

   
 July 1974:

Students start entering the wards of the 300 bedded R.M.C. Hospital. Labour Room posting in the then Women Hospital in the Imphal Bazar area.

   
 August 1, 1976:

Management taken over by the North Eastern Regional Medical College Society. The Institute was renamed as North Eastern Regional Medical College.

   
 May 1977:

First batch of students appeared in the final MBBS Examination, practical and viva of which was conducted in presence of Inspectors from M.C.I.

   
 Late 1977:

The Scientific Society was formed. Monthly meetings organized. The first issue of the Bulletin of Scientific Society brought out in 1977.

   
 Dec. 1977: Second batch of students bring laurels to the College by bagging the 1st four positions in the Final MBBS Examination under Gauhati University.
   
 1979: Undergraduate admission increased to 75 students per year from a previous of 50 per year.
   
 April 2, 1979: Microbiology Department was separated from Pathology Department.
   
 Nov. 1980: The College changed its affiliation from Gauhati University to Manipur University.
   
 1983:

A superspeciality Unit (Plastic Surgery) was opened. Subsequently in 1985 the Superspeciality Unit of Urology was also opened.

   
 1983: Scientific Society, RMC was renamed as Medical Society. Its yearly bulletin was also renamed as Journal of the Medical Society.
   
 July 12, 1985 Dept. of Radiotherapy was separated from the then Radiology Department.
   
 1990:

Postgraduate Degree courses started in Obst. & Gyane., Surgery and Pathology (DCP). 

   
 June 1990:

NAIPPNW Medical Students of Manipur were presented the prestigious Albert Schweitzer Peace Achievement Award by the International Physicians for the Prevention of Nuclear War at Stockholm, Sweden. A team of Doctors and Students from R.M.C. attended the 10th Anniversary Congress of IPPNW.

   
 1992: Undergraduate admission increased further to 85 per year.
   
 1993:

The AIDS Surveillance Centre in the Microbiology Dept. became an AIDS Reference Centre, RIMS (one of the Nine Reference Centres in India).

   
 July 1994:

The Institute Library receives facilities for MEDLINE access from the W.H.O. as one of the first three Medical Institutions in India provided with such service. CD-ROM upgrades are received regularly at monthly intervals.

   
 Oct. 26, 1994: New Operation Theatre Complex becomes functional.
   
 April 1, 1995: The Institute was renamed as Regional Institute of Medical Sciences.
   
 April 1, 1995: The Dept. of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation which started as N.E.C. Project on 28th Dec. 1984 and was known as CRC initially became an integral part of the Institute.
   
 April 8, 1996: Intensive Coronary Care Unit was opened.
   
 July 25, 1996:

New Psychiatry Block inaugurated and the whole Psychiatric facilities including Ward and O.P.D. was shifted to the new building adjoining the I.D. Ward.

   
 May 5, 1997: C. T. Scan installed in RIMS - the third such Scanner in the state.
   
 May 31, 1997:

The New Emergency Block which includes a special ward and Operation Theatre of the RIMS Hospital was inaugurated.

   
 August 2, 1997: Alumni Association of RMC/RIMS was renamed as “RIMSONIANS”.
   
 May 21, 1999: The 1000 capacity Auditorium “Jubilee Hall” was inaugurated by Hon’ble Prime Minister of India, Shri A.B. Vajpayee. 
   
 July 5, 1999: The 150 bedded New Hospital Block was commissioned by His Excellency, Governor of Manipur Shri O.N. Srivastava.
   
 1999: Undergraduate admission increased further to 100 seats per annum.
   
 June 28, 2000: Unit of Biostatistics was opened.
   
 Oct. 6, 2001: The 30 bedded Radiotherapy New Block was commissioned.
   
 Oct. 6, 2001: Inauguration of Incinerator.
   
 Feb. 1, 2003: MRI was installed in the Dept., of Radiodiagnosis.
   
 August 19, 2003: Department of Clinical Psychology was opened.
   
 Dec. 11, 2003:

Telemedicine Specialist Centre (TSC) was commissioned by Indian Space Research Organization (ISRO) as a part of Telemedicine Programme of the N.E.C .

   
 April 1, 2004: ART Centre, RIMS was inaugurated.
   
 Nov. 26, 2004:

RIMS was admitted as a member of the UNESCO chair in bioethics world network. The institute is the first and the only Medical College in the N.E Region having been conferred this rare honour and status.

   
 Sept. 14, 2005:

RIMS web site: www.rims.cdac.noida.in is launched. The address was later on changed to www.rims.edu.in.

   
 Nov. 6, 2006: H.G. Khorana Lecture Hall was inaugurated.
   
 April 1, 2007:

RIMS came under the Ministry of Health & Family Welfare, Govt. of India.

   
 April 10, 2007: MoU signed between All India Institute of Speech & Hearing, Mysore and RIMS to start Diploma course in Language, Speech and Hearing.
   
 April 24, 2007:

MoU signed between NEC, DoNER and MoHFW, Govt. of India to handover RIMS to MoHFW, Govt. of India w.e.f 1-4-2007.

   
 July 17, 2007:

The first EC meeting under the Chairmanship of Secretary Health & Family Welfare, Govt. of India was held.

   
 Feb. 2, 2008: A 9 bedded Medical Intensive Care Unit was inaugurated.
   
 April 2, 2008:

The first Board of Governors meeting after transfer of the institute to MoHFW, Govt. of India under the chairmanship of Dr. Anbumani Ramadoss, Hon’ble Union Minister of Health & Family Welfare, Govt. of India was held.

   
 May 14, 2008:

A 32 bedded new Special Ward Block was inaugurated by Dr. Anbumani Ramadoss, Hon’ble Union Minister of Health & Family Welfare, Govt. of India.

   
 May 14, 2008:

Dr. Anbumani Ramadoss, Hon’ble Union Minister of Health & Family Welfare, laid foundation stones of Nursing College, Dental College and new OPD Block.

   
 Feb 12, 2009:

Journal of Medical Society RIMS website www.medicalsociety.rims.edu.in was launched.

   
 July 22, 2009: Departments of Immunohaematology and Blood Transfusion course was started.
   
July 2010: M.Ch. Courses in Urology & Plastic Surgery started.
  P.G./Post Doctural (including Diploma courses DCP/DA) seats have been increased to 151
   
June 2011: File Tracker implemented in A-Block, RIMS, Imphal
