INTRODUCTION           

The Population Based Cancer Registry (PBCR), RIMS Imphal, has been functioning in the department of Pathology, Regional Institute of Medical Sciences (RIMS) since January 2003. It is one of the cancer registries in Northeastern India that functions under the National Cancer Registry Programme (NCRP) of the Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR). It covers the whole of the state with a total area of 22,327 Sq.Km and the total population of 28,55,794 (2011 census) from January 2005 onwards. 

WORKING OF THE REGISTRY

Though cancer became a notifiable disease in the state of Manipur through a gazette notification No.31/10/2016-M (Misc.) on 22nd of February 2017.

The purpose of a cancer registry is to systematically collect, store and manage standardized data on cancer patients. This population-based data serves as a vital foundation for tracking disease trends, evaluating treatment effectively, planning public health interventions and advancing medical research to reduce overall cancer burden.

REGISTRY STAFF (PBCR), Imphal 

   Principal and Co-Principal Investigators provide overall supervision and guidance. The method of daily working and technical guidance, as well as assessment of work done every week, is done by the Medical Research Officer. A statistician takes the responsibility of tabulating the data collected and subsequent statistical evaluation. Computer programmers and Data Entry operators assist with data entry and other technical tasks using computers. Medical Social Workers collect basic data from patients and other sources and enter the same into the Core Proforma forms.
